Computer Safety
The internet is a powerful educational tool that provides invaluable information to all computer users at SAS. But, like any endeavor there are some risks and annoyances when using the internet so we take certain precautions to protect our computer users. Some of the steps we take at the IS division are listed below:
- SAS has implemented filtering software that allows us to block sites based on a national database of inappropriate sites as well as sites not listed in the database that we deem are inappropriate for our students.
- Search preferences for Internet Explorer are set to "safe search" mode to try and eliminate inappropriate information from being accessed from school.
- Students at the IS division are always supervised when using computers.
- IS Students are given an internet safety class covering the following:
- What information to share, i.e., public vs. personal.
- How to do safe internet searches.
- What to do (and not do) if you come across inappropriate information.
Although there are other things to consider in addition to what's listed above, the technology program at the IS Divsion is structured so students are only on computers when supervised and working on curricular projects or keyboarding. If you, as a parent, allow your child to use a computer at home with an internet connection then please take the time to browse the links below to see what you can do to safeguard your child's internet / computer use at home.
P.S. We are always looking for good resources on computer use and internet safety. If you come across any please feel free to forward the internet address so I can add them to our database of internet safety links. |
