Student Workshops

Friendship Group!
This workshop teaches students skills about friendship.  We learn what it means to be a good friend, how to make and keep friends and how to handle many different scenarios through fun activities and games.  We have short group discussions followed by a lot of playing in order for students to practice what we’ve learned.  We observe their playing and give them feedback on different choices that were made.  Together we discuss what worked and what didn’t.
This group is ideal for new students who are still transitioning and trying to make new friends.  It is also helpful for those students who have difficulty maintaining friendships or those who would simply like to make new friends!

Staying Calm and Cool
This workshop focuses on Anger Management.  We learn about what makes us angry and how to identify those triggers early.  We learn skills to ensure that we stay in control and deal with our anger appropriately.  Students understand that it’s okay to get angry but it’s not okay to loose control.
This group is ideal for students who find it difficult to control themselves when they are angry or those who keep anger inside and don’t deal with it at all.

Learning About Me
This workshop teaches students about Self-Awareness.  Students learn skills to become more aware of their surroundings and how their behavior affects others.  We practice problem solving and thinking through actions before acting.
This group is ideal for students who are impulsive and may not always be aware or “tuned in” to the way their behavior and choices affect others and themselves.

Familes on the Move & Students on the Move Workshops
These workshops are offered twice a year (November and April) in the form of one parent coffee and two student meetings.  The counselors provide a presentation for each group addressing the many issues associated with moving.  Discussions about “Third Culture Kids” and important knowledge about how to prepare for the move, leave your present residence and enter your new one, are all shared to help support families in making a successful transition.

Homework Club
This service is offered by invitation only to students who need extra support and could benefit from developing routines, organization and responsibility with homework.  This is not an academic support group.  There is no fee for this service.

Program 1
Is closely supervised by Marc L’Heureux, Susan Bennett and George Bach Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:15-4:15.

Program 2
Is supervised by a number of volunteers from our High School Monday through Thursday from 3:15-4:15.

The Lunch Bunch
This program was developed to encourage inclusiveness among all students.  The goal of the program is to ensure that all students have someone to play with and activities to do during their lunch recess.  The Lunch Bunch room is run by the Counseling Aide and Peer Supporters from the High School also help to support the program.  This is a room where kids can come to make connections with others and make new friends.

Lunch Bunch Leaders are also chosen from Gecko Land to help invite kids to participate in the Lunch Bunch and support kids making new friends.  These Lunch Bunch Leaders will be trained to learn leadership skills and to help reinforce our 5 Character Pillars – Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Compassion and Fairness.

New Gecko Group
This group is offered for all new students to SAS.  A program is run for the first 3 weeks of school in August and the first 3 weeks of school in January when most of our new students arrive.  We all get together to talk about how things are going.  Students share what they love about SAS and what they are still finding difficult.  Together we share solutions to ensure they all have the most positive transition as possible.
